Hi Jess,
Sorry, I didn't see you question on my Blog until now. China is amazing; you should definitely take your dad up on his offer. My grandmother, who emigrated from China, gave me the trip as a gift. It was really amazing getting to see places she had been when her life was completely different from how it is now.
I liked Shanghai gardens the most!
